They are not burning up stored fat. Sure, burning up recently eaten food is necessary to get to all that stored fat but a calorie deficit is necessary for any results to be attained.
A person who eats an extra 1,500 calories per day who burns up 400 calories from jogging ends up eating 1,200 extra calories per day. Stored fat ends up being saved and stored. Rothkranz points out the body does not want to burn up stored fat since stored fat is intended for emergencies. Stored fat helps keep people from starving when they don’t have food.
